Arsenal Fans Fuming at VAR Decision
A controversial VAR decision during Arsenal’s clash against West Ham has left fans seeing red.
Within the first 15 minutes of the game, Tomas Soucek converted Jarrod Bowen’s assist into a goal.
However, controversy struck when VAR intervened to check if the ball had gone out of play while in Bowen’s possession – a decision that proved tricky to make.
The rules state that the whole ball has to be over the line for it to be deemed out of play, but a conclusive view couldn’t be found due to Bowen’s thigh blocking the view, despite consulting various camera angles.
After nearly 4 minutes of deliberations, the VAR eventually decided to allow the goal, making it 1-0 to West Ham, who went on to win the match with 2-0.
Arsenal supporters took to social media to rage at the decision, calling it “crazy” and saying “that ball was definitely out”!
This is the second time Arsenal have been involved in a situation similar to this, with Newcastle’s winner against the Gunners in November controversially awarded after Joe Willock took the ball near the byline.
Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta, has said that it is a “shame” that the VAR was not clear enough to determine if the goal should have stood or not.
